The entry into force of Brazil’s accession to the Budapest Treaty, enacted by Decree No. 13.011/2026, represents a significant step forward for the country’s patent system and innovation ecosystem.

The treaty establishes international recognition of the deposit of microorganisms for patent purposes, simplifying procedures, reducing costs and enhancing legal certainty for inventors, companies and research institutions.

The measure also paves the way for Brazilian institutions to be recognised as International Depositary Authorities, strengthening the national infrastructure supporting innovation and contributing to the development of biotechnology in Brazil.

This issue highlights the growing importance of intellectual property as a strategic tool for research, technological development and competitiveness.
