As already reported, in July 2019, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office – BPTO developed a streamlined prosecution system seeking to tackle the huge patent backlog.
Since then, the BPTO’s performance has been substantially improving. For instance, the number of allowance or rejection decisions increased by approximately 230% from 2014 to 2019 (6,074 decisions then compared to 20,332 decisions now).
In view of the current COVID-19 pandemic, there were reasonable concerns that the efforts to resolve the backlog problem could be in jeopardy. Fortunately, this is not what the numbers currently demonstrate.
